Why waffle, not terry

Terry towels absorb by holding water in a dense pile. Waffle absorbs through its honeycomb structure, which traps air as well as water - so it takes up as much and then dries out far faster. It is the most travel friendly towel you will ever find.

Waffle also gets better with age. Terry sheds and flattens; waffle opens up and becomes more absorbent with every wash.

Printed, not just woven

Almost every towel sold in India is plain, striped or machine-printed. This one is hand block printed in Sanganer, which is unusual on waffle - the raised texture means the printer has to work the block harder to get the colour into the weave. The result sits slightly open across the surface rather than flat, which is how you can tell it was done by hand.

The craft

Sanganer, just south of Jaipur, has printed cloth for more than four centuries. The work is done by the chhipa - the community of master block printers and dyers whose name comes from chhapa, to print. Blocks are carved from teak by hand, one for each colour, and pressed along the length of the cloth at a long table. Where the blocks meet you will sometimes see a faint overlap. That is the hand.

Care

• Wash before first use — this opens the weave and starts the absorbency

• No fabric softener — it coats the cotton and kills absorbency, on any towel

Good to know

• Waffle is lighter and less bulky than a terry towel by design. If you want the thick hotel-towel feel, this isn't that - it's the faster-drying, less heavy alternative

Frequently asked questions

Is a waffle towel as absorbent as terry?
Yes, and it dries out much faster afterwards. Terry holds water in a thick pile; waffle holds it in a honeycomb that also lets air through. Both dry you; only one dries itself quickly.

Is it thin?
