Why cotton-jute

Pure cotton throws drape beautifully and slip off everything. Jute in the weave gives the cloth a slight coarseness and enough weight to stay where you put it - folded over a sofa arm, thrown across the foot of a bed, or over the back of a cane chair. The texture also takes block print differently from smooth cotton: the colour sits a little more open across the weave, which is what gives these their hand-made look up close.

The craft

Sanganer, just south of Jaipur, has printed cloth for more than four centuries. The work is done by the chhipa - the community of master block printers and dyers whose name comes from chhapa, to print. Blocks are carved from teak by hand, one for each colour in the design, and pressed along the length of the cloth at a long table. Where the blocks meet you will sometimes see a faint overlap. That is the hand, and it is what separates this from a screen print.

Care

• First wash separately in cold water
• Machine wash gentle, mild detergent, no bleach
• Wash inside out to protect the printed surface
• Dry in shade - direct sun will fade the print over time
• Warm iron on the reverse
• Jute softens with washing; the first wash relaxes the cloth noticeably

Is it soft, or scratchy?
Cotton-jute has more texture than pure cotton by design - it's what stops it sliding. It softens noticeably after the first wash and keeps softening.
